”Saraki Must Resign As Senate President” Adams Oshiomhole [Read Full Gist]

APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomole, says since Senate President Bukola Saraki, has defected from the party he rode on to become the number 3 citizen in Nigeria, it will be honorable for him to resign his position as senate president.

Oshiomole said this while speaking to state house correpsondents after a meeting with President Buhari yesterday August 1st.

According to Oshiomhole, it is a matter of honour for Saraki to leave “the crown in the family it belongs to.”

”Whatever is the reason, we can defect from the party but we can’t defect from Nigeria. The only thing is that there are other consequential issues that every man or woman of honour who had taken such decisions would be expected to follow through. I mean you should not collect a crown that belongs to a family and wear it on behalf of the family if for your personal reasons which he has enumerated that he has gone to another family. It is just a matter of honour to leave the crown in the house that the crown belongs to. As it stands even now, the APC is still the largest party in the Senate. We have 53 senators, that is much more than what the PDP has, or APGA has” he said

When the APC leadership, including President Buhari, called for Dr Saraki to step down as Senate President on account of his defection from the ruling party, I chuckled with amusement and recalled the following story:

The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday said it was wrong to ask Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal to quit the speaker’s position simply because he defected to the minority party in the House of Representatives.

APC national publicity secretary Lai Mohammed said, “Those who are saying that the speaker should resign have forgotten history. In 1982 when the NPN and NPP accord broke down, Ume-Ezeoke did not step down as the speaker neither did Wash Pam step down as the deputy president of the senate.”

Mohammed said also that APC is now in control of the structures of the House as the speaker is now a member of the party.
He said the defection of the speaker is not about the party but about the country which will witness a robust National Assembly with better legislations.

“It is not about the fortunes of the party it is about the fortunes of the country. Now we are going to have more qualitative laws, and this is a man who enjoys support across board so we have a speaker who is accepted on the right and the left,” he said.
